Jolly Buoy Island is part of the Mahatma Gandhi National Park and is one of the popular tourist attractions of Andamans. The island is known for its crystal clear turquoise waters and huge variety of marine life. The long white sand beach at the island is fringed by dense forests. Located at 30 km from Port Blair, Jolly Buoy Island is open for six months of the year, i.e. from November to April. Since it is falls in the open sea area, the island is closed for tourists during the monsoon season (from May to October).
Things to do on Jolly Buoy Island
Jolly Buoy Island is an excellent place to see under water corals. Tourists can view corals either by snorkeling, scuba diving or by glass bottom boat. Snorkeling can be done only at the time of high tides as there is a danger of corals getting damaged when the water is shallow. The beach here is not fringed with palms but by dense forests; in case you are the lazy types, you can enjoy the picturesque views surrounding the island.
Jolly Buoy Island is no man's land and hence there are no eateries on the island. It is advisable to carry your own food and drinking water. It would be convenient if you could carry some bed sheets so that you could sit and relax. Keep in mind that there is no proper place for changing clothes. Those interested in snorkeling and scuba diving would have to bring their own gear as no such facility is available on the island.
How to Reach
Regular ferry service to Jolly Buoy Island is available from Wandoor Beach, which is located at a distance of 30 km from Port Blair by road. Boats to Jolly Buoy island depart by 9.00 am and since all the boats leave and come back at the same time, it is advisable that you reach Wandoor Beach before 9.00 am. The boats depart from Jolly Buoy Island by 2.30 p.m. You need prior permit to go to Jolly Buoy Island, make sure you get that.
Jolly Buoy is a No Plastic zone and hence all the plastic items are to be surrendered at the Wandoor Beach before leaving for the island. You can rent water bottles by securing a deposit and get your security back by returning the items.
