Ross Island was the erstwhile administrative headquarter of the British in Andamans till 1941, when an earthquake rocked the island and forced them to resettle at Port Blair. Located 2 km east of Port Blair, the island is presently under the administrative control of Indian Navy. In the British era, the Ross Island was popularly known as the ‘Paris of the East’. To better appreciate the history of the place, visit the small museum that houses pictures taken and drawn in those times. A sound and light show is also held in the evening depicting the life in the times gone by. Presently, the show is in Hindi and its duration is 45 minutes.
Apart from a peek into the history, Ross Island offers breathtaking views of the open sea. You can sit here for hours gazing at the amazing views with gentle breeze flowing around. There is an additional bonus for the animal and bird lovers as the island is home to a number of peacocks, deers and ducks.
How to Reach
You can reach Ross Island by taking a ferry ride from Aberdeen Jetty, Port Blair. Ferries run from 7 am to 3 pm at frequent intervals. Ferry service is subject to weather conditions and government clearances. The fare is Rs.100 per person per trip. Naval authorities charge an entry fee of Rs 50 for adults and every visitor coming to the island is required to sign in on entering. No entry fee is charged for children up to nine years of age. The island is open on all days of the week except Wednesday.
The light and sound show is held in the evening, after it gets dark. Ferry service for taking people to this show starts from Aberdeen Jetty at 4 pm. The cost of ticket for the show is Rs 100.
