The airport is named after the famous freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. It caters to domestic airlines and no international flight lands here. All the major domestic airlines, i.e. Air India, Jet Airways, Indigo, SpiceJet and GoAir fly to Port Blair. Direct flights to Port Blair Airport are available only from Chennai and Kolkata. Flights from other major destinations such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad etc have a stopover either at Chennai or Kolkata. So, while planning a trip to Andamans it is essential that you account for the stopover time at Chennai or Kolkata airport. The flying time from Chennai and Kolkata to Port Blair is 2 hour 15 minutes.
Due to its unique geography, the airport is a difficult airfield and tests the skills of the pilots to the fullest.
