Veer Savarkar International Airport

Veer Savarkar International Airport - Veer Savarkar Airport is located in Port Blair, Andaman and is the only airport that caters to the whole of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The airport is named after the famous freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. It caters to domestic airlines and no international flight lands here. All the major domestic airlines, i.e. Air India, Jet Airways, Indigo, SpiceJet and GoAir fly to Port Blair. Direct flights to Port Blair Airport are available only from Chennai and Kolkata. Flights from other major destinations such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad etc have a stopover either at Chennai or Kolkata. So, while planning a trip to Andamans it is essential that you account for the stopover time at Chennai or Kolkata airport. The flying time from Chennai and Kolkata to Port Blair is 2 hour 15 minutes.

Due to its unique geography, the airport is a difficult airfield and tests the skills of the pilots to the fullest. There is a hillock at one end of the airport as a result of which, the planes can take off only in one direction. Additionally, winds change here every six months, so aircrafts either take off or land with strong tail winds. No flight comes to departs from Port Blair after 3pm. This vital piece of information should be kept in mind while planning itinerary.
